Commodore CBM 8032 video display problem

Can you (Jules) load programs from tape that you've saved yourself?

Yeh Mike, loading and saving onto tape beautifully! I've actually loaded successfully a few C64 programs (just the basic text based ones).

I do not know what the line is trying to do but there is an extra closed parenthesis at the end

Ah, of course! I saw that but thought the two (parenthesises) at the end were accounted for... should have looked more closely!

Will try that when I get home from work.

BTW. Anyone recommend a supplier of 2114 video RAMs? Wouldn't mind resusitating my faithful vic20 after it took one for the team last week.

EDIT:
The problem with code turns out to be a missing Open Prens just before 'len'

Sorry Dave, just noticed this. Will try this when I get home from work!

I've used a pet emulator on my 64 to load pet programs off disk and then save them to tape. You need to do this because the load addresses are quite different.
I also have the petdisk and like it but my main pet has a msd-2 drive hooked to it.

GENTLEMEN...

This is indeed a fine day!

I can't thank you all enough for your invaluable contribution...

Little late, I know, but congratulations on getting your machine working and you're certainly welcome for any little bit of help I might have provided. Have fun with it!

Thx Eudimorphodon! Lovin the 8032!

Does anyone know any other sites that have TAP files for the PET (and hopefully for 8032) besides:

I've just started looking into the cause of the lil fireworks display my 4040 treated me to last week. The high pass filter has burnt out (which i think is pretty common with vintage electronics).

I was thinking about starting a new forum, but at this stage the only issue (at this stage) is the HPF.

Do you think it would be safe to bypass it? Or should I try and replace it?

Thx guys!

Jules, that looks like a pretty standard plug. Even the mounting holes look standard. I would think that just about anything with that kind of plug should work fine. Is there something you can part out to get one?

With this vintage gear, we need all the protection we can get, so if that's a mini surge suppressor, or something to keep interference out, I would want it in there and would not want to bypass it.

Well done Kevin finding this! I searched for hours with no luck. Yes, they do have the 2114s, but you have to spend at least $30 for international purchases, but I think it will be easy to add a few items including the HPF to make up the $30.

So... the 4040 is 'working', at least it turns on, the leds all light up when you first turn it on, the drives both 'rumble' on startup, but that's about it. None of the commands from the 8032 initiate the drives (directory, load"*",8 etc). It recognises it's there (the middle LED light initally goes off after you turn it on, but comes on when you type in a command).

I'll probably start a new forum after I have a really good look at it. The data cable looks a little worn, may also look closely at the PCBs etc for the usual culprits.

Til then...

Yes, Thailand is geographically closer to Australia than the United States are. I don't know about customs/VAT issues though, but for small packets of low value perhaps those usually are let through.

I'd never heard of Futurlec either, but they do have an office in Australia. However, although they appear to have the RAM for your donor VIC-20, I wasn't able to find the filtered power connectors.

I buy from futurlec all the time. Shipping is a bit slow to the US but the prices are good, and I've never had a problem with them or the quality of the parts.

I suppose that's true, Mike. I was thinking of the whole power unit as a "black box". Jules, can you get into it? If so, and it's only a single cap that fried, it should be pretty easy to replace it. Get the number off the surviving one...there's 2, right?

Kevin, there's actually 3 'box' capacitors in the "black box", and they all looked fried!

Thx guys for the Futurlec lead, I'll get onto it now!

Hectic week, so the poor ol 8032 hasn't had the usual attention... time to get stuck into the 4040 to! :p

UPDATE: just checked out Futurlec... they have 2114N-2L - 1Kx4 200ns Low Power RAM. Will these work with the Vic??
