Commodore DTV

One interesting thing I've come across online is the Commodore 64 DTV, which is a single chip C64 emulator built into a joystick. There are contacts on the board which you can solder to: you can connect to a ps/2 keyboard, and bring out the serial connector to a real disc drive.

Some people have hacked these into full working C64 systems.

My question is: has anyone here played around with this? Has anyone built a whole system out of one of these? i would love to build my own mini C64 out of one of these.

I've been wanting to get ahold of one of those units for the sole purpose of hacking. I'm keeping my eyes peeled at thrift stores and garage sales

I have one, but it's the only one I have seen around here, so until I get another this one is it. If I do find another, I'll be making a really cool breakout box for it. Pretty fun games on it.

I bought an unused, still wrapped NTSC C64DTV a couple of weeks ago. I yet haven't checked it out and don't know if I will either, or just keep it in its package. If you want used DTV's, they are fairly common on the 'Bay. The PAL C64D2TV may be harder to obtain though.

They sold out around here pretty quick so I went on Amazon to find a few folks with new ones still. Guess you could also find them on other auction sites if you look around. I haven't modded mine yet, I bought 3 so I could have 1 never opened and one to hack and another for either collection or regular play. Still, I'm lazy so hadn't gotten around to that project yet.

I was lucky enough to find one of these at a Goodwill in the Portland area. Plan A was to use it as a distraction in the eves as I was working out of town and had a lot of hotel time to kill. The video out cable is very tempermental and works mostly when it feels like it, so I have a guilt free DTV project ahead of me :D

Oh, I forgot to mention I got a second one of these great little machines to tinker around with. My plan is to make it into a portable, and maybe "embed" it into a complete mini-C64. Great stuff!!
