Compaq & Dell PDA CF-card usage?

I have a Dell Axim X30 and a Compaq Ipaq 3975: I want to use them as MP3 players. What do I need to do to get them to play music? I've put some MP3's on the cards then used Active Sync to do whatever it is I'm supposed to do, but I'm at a loss as to what that is... I have a XP Compaq 700 Presario laptop with service pack 2 that I'm using to dump the files and run Active Sync: SP3 isn't compatible.

I'm sure I need to load something onto these PDA's, like with using the keyboard. What do I need?

You don't need ActiceSync if you have put the music on the cards. Just use file explorer and double click the files. They should just open.
