I’ve inherited a Compaq Portable III, plus the ISA ports expansion pack on the back and it also has a 287 math coprocessor.
As far as I can tell, everything is original and also works perfectly. It has the factory Compaq DOS 3.20 but upgraded to MS-DOS 6.20. It has LapLink and also INTERSVR. I have not tested the 5.25” drive yet due to a lack of diskettes to test with.
It does seem to drop keystrokes if I type fast (120 wpm+); don’t know if this is normal. Typing slowly and with deep key presses works.
So my questions are:
- What is something interesting to do with this?
- Is the keyboard situation normal?
- Can I take the RAM past 640 kB? Compaq has a Windows driver for the 640x400 display.
Overall, this is a very impressive piece of equipment to turn on and still have the app custom built for it (some dBASE app) work perfectly.
