I have an original Compaq portable that is suddenly booting with a 601 error. It worked perfectly until I needed it, of course.

If anyone has a Compaq disk/printer controller for the Portable I'd really love to buy one to replace my apparently defunct one.

Also, speaking of Compaq, does anyone have a 5.25" startup/setup disk for the Portable III? I know where I can get an image, but I'm not set up to make disks at the moment.

Thanks,

Portable III disks

Well, my Portable III is in pieces in a box, and I can't find the
setup & diag disks at the moment.

However...

I assume you're talking about SP0316, which is 2 x 5.25" disks; if no
one closer to ya can D/L & recreate them for you, I suppose I could
make & send you the disks.

What kind of collector are ya anyway, that you don't have a 5.25 drive
within reach at any moment? ;-)

I have literally dozens, but none capable of getting data off the internet or from a 3.5 or CD that I can create on my main machine.

That problem will be fixed eventually (I have a 486 Win 3.11 machine pretty near workable for data transfers of that type) but I haven't had the time. :(

I spent this weekend nearly destroying a Compucolor II, bringing an Osborne 1 back to life (which reminds me, does anyone have an OCC1 keyboard to spare?) and trying to determine how 3 year old NiCads on my HX20 wouldn't hold a charge, finding and testing my Sharp PC1251, hauling out, diagnosing and cursing out my once pristine Compaq portable and digging for various boot disks for the aforementioned machines.

I still have about 15-20 linear feet of magazines to catalog, a Mark-8 project to kickstart and another 2-3 portable/luggable machines to pull out, clean up and test.

Not to mention a job, wife, kids, etc. :D

Thanks for the offer and sorry for the rant. ;)

I think I see your problem: drives aren't capable of getting stuff off
the Internet, you need a computer for that...

Job, wife, kids??? Not familiar with those; are they names of old computers?

Sounds like you had a fine productive weekend.

BTW, there is a 3.5" version of that Softpaq (SP0308) if you've got a
3.5DD drive that you can hook up to the Portable III
