I have a couple of 3com SDSL modems like this one (https://www.ebay.com/itm/333753270135).
I am trying to hook them up directly using a copper wire pair and see if they can establish a DSL connection. Unlike ADSL, I understand this should be possible with SDSL modems.
This very old Slashdot thread seems to confirm that it's possible: https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/01/04/29/158250/what-to-do-with-old-dsl-modems
However, I've had no luck getting the modems to connect so far. I have tried connecting them using 4-wire (RJ11) cables and 6-wire (RJ12) cables but the DSL LED doesn't turn on. If I completely disconnect the cables, the DSL LED turns red which tells me the the modems can detect the cable but establish a DSL connection.
Does anyone have experience with these devices? Am I correct in expecting these modems to be able to connect over a direct RJ11/12 cable?
P.S. I understand this is not exactly a vintage "computing" question so moderators, feel free to move the question or delete it if this violates any rules.
