DEC units on ebay

This VAX 4000-500 has been listed a few times. Now it is down to $200 starting bid, which is not too bad of a price if you happen to be somewhere near the San Francisco area to pick it up locally:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/314951903547

Doesn't have any DSSI drives installed, or appear to have any Q-bus expansion boards installed, and no photos of the CPU bulkhead panel open to show that the KA680 CPU and some memory boards are actually installed. I'd want to see photos with the CPU bulkhead panel open if I was interested in this myself.
I was tempted by this since i am local, but being that its a scrap yard and no pictures of the boards i will pass. If he took a few pictures im sure it would have been picked up already since there are a lot of DEC enthusiasts in the area

This one is nice. It has a lot of early revision boards, but should work OK.

I bought a similar system including a Sykes floppy diskette in a tall cabinet for $1,000 a few years ago.
I’ve been waiting for this one to appear! I saw this in person when I picked up my PDP-8/A earlier this year. Needless to say I immediately wanted to bring it home as well, but figured it would be significantly out of my price range. The possibility arose, but I couldn’t think of a fair price to even make a reasonable offer.

I didn’t get a chance to look inside though, so not sure what it has there.

DEC DIGITAL PDP-8E / TU56 DECTAPE TRANSPORT IN CABINET W/ MANUALS

I like this one a lot. You repair the crumbling foam issues and you might have a pretty nice machine. If the module list is accurate then it has 8k of core and the TD8E DECtape controller. It also has the ROM thing which would let you boot from the TD8E and gave you 12k with the last 4k being semiconductor and sort of a shadow ROM. I think this was a pretty rare setup. The list does not show a console interface which I find odd. Since there are no photos of the inside of the 8/e itself there is no way to verify any of this.

If I was feeling flush I would contact the seller and find out more particulars. If everything I think is there is there then it might be worth the starting bid price of$7500. But this is one of those situations where I would go pick it up myself.

I sent a note to the seller asking for photos of the cards inside the CPU. I won't be buying this machine but I hope it finds a good home.
Very nice machine but even the starting price is sadly way outside of what I can afford.
The TU56 would be a nice thing to have and so is the rack. Oh well one can always dream. :)

And it would be quite an adventure for you to retrieve it ... "Local pickup only from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, United States."

Indeed. The seller also has two 11/45's up there, RP11 controller, TU10, some interestingly unusual stuff.

I do not need an 11/45........

That 11/20 doen't seem to have any memory in it? 11/45 are quite powerfull but if I can't lift a CPU on my own, then it is probably not for me. The same is for an 8i. These are not easy to handle...

Well that didn’t last long at $8k
Thanks for posting that as it gives me some good clear photos of the RK03/Diablo 6RU fascia panel with the receptacle for the pack. I racked my Diablos on that spacing and had been trying to extract some details of those vacformed panels from grainy photos in the 11/20 handbook with the intention of 3D printing a lookalike set.
Note that it also shows part of the RK11-C to Diablo MRAC42 connector adapter boards. I recently obtained the details on those from a kind owner, wonder if this is perhaps the same machine.

Nice to see some bigger machines available. I'm over the pond so not realistic, but hopefully we will get some 11's coming up in the UK.

I can confirm there will be some more PDP-11 machines becoming available at some point in the near future within the UK. I can't say when though.

Very cheap - a suitable donation to the charity we support.

If there's a BM08 I'm going to be in Antwerp in 2 weeks, have a empty checked bag, and a checkbook for a "donation"......

I'm surprised that H960 hasn't gone yet. It took me years to find any where I am, then two came up 1000 miles away and I got a removalist to back load them over a month. Maybe they are really common stateside?

Let me know 😀

A PDP-8m that has never been powered on by the seller and selling as-is. Missing several cosmetic pieces like power switch and cover. One bidder at $5999. Yikes.

I sure hope that one card towards the back is not really inserted into two slots. Half the card appears to be in one slots and half in the next one over. Or maybe it's just laying in there. Hard to tell. $5999 is way too much for this system. But all the seller needs to find is one idiot willing to pay big bucks.

I wonder what kind of person bids on something in that condition and that excessive price? In my experience wealthy people are particularly careful to get value for money.

Well, It is their money and they 'probably' have a good reason for bidding at that price...

Perhaps they already have an 8/m with bits missing and this has the requisite bits? Who knows...

Dave

I think that people buy such a system for the parts they need and resell the leftovers.
