Presumably the right forum for it. Title says it all. Not sure how to extract the CPU from this oddball LCC socket Dell used on these motherboards. This board started acting up recently and so I threw in the Landmark Diags after testing all the ram chips seperately. Landmark chokes/fails at Protected mode, so I need to pop the CPU out and try another to verify. Any insight on removal is greatly appreciated (before I wind up destroying the socket).. Pic of the victim attached. The heatsink I stuck on.. the metal clip part isn't hinged and is not very flex and on the corners.

What's oddball about the socket? Looks like a CLCC socket with a retention clip. Remove the clip and the chip should just pop out. You remove the clip by prying on the sides, not the top.

It's oddball for someone like me who'd never seen this style until these boards. :) I figured it was prying, but I didn't want to put too much muscle on it and snap. Thanks Chuck.

Yes, just pry outwards on the clip. You need only get one side free. Note the small tabs to help you. Note how the top of the side supports are rounded to assist in getting the thing back on.

It took quite a bit of prying force (and i wound up scraping one side of the outside of the socket (thankfully didn't gouge the board).. I had to pry all 3 of 4 corners before it would 'let go'.. I think i see why _I_ have never seen these everywhere.

I get a "Oops! We ran into some problems." message when I try to view your image. I
I started a new thread about the diagnosis issue so more would see it since they may not look at a 'how to remove a CPU' thread for actual mb questions. lol
