Did Tandy clone the 1000 series to other companies to resell?

There is a lot of cross-over with Panasonic. The 1100FD was identical to the Panasonic Business Partner (original laptop).

The Model 100 was a derivative of a Kyocera design (shared with NEC and Epson).

DEC rebadged the low-profile Tandy 2500 designs as DECstation 386sx, etc.

More likely the other way around.

Tandy had large production facilities in the US and produced PCs as an OEM for DEC and others, but they were 386 machines.

I’ve never seen a clone of the lower 1000 series before. Later on they started rebadging imports from the Far East like everyone else, but not the 1000 series.

I distinctly recall having a Panasonic 386 machine at one point that looked a lot like the later Tandy 1000s. I cannot remember the model name and have never been able to find it on ebay. It was the first VGA machine we had for an extended period.

Here we go.. just popped up on my ebay feed:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-...1:g:1MEAAOSwwiZbbbr9:rk:4:pf:1&frcectupt=true

That is what I had (minus the 5.25" drive). The case is slightly different but everything is placed the same. Even the power button. Case closed. :)

Don't know why they are so rare. This was the successor to our 5170. I don't know how but somehow I ended up with it. I traded it to a computer store that allowed trades and got something else... I think a 486-33 board and CPU.

I linked to that listing in the opening comment in this thread, lol.

Sounds like the Panasonic connection has been covered. I think it's a CF-150b that is the same as the 1100, except it doesn't have Deskmate (and maybe not even DOS?) in ROM. I have one here that I've not messed with. I'd like to have one of the desktop models as noted, but not at current asking (or even selling) prices.

Tandy also made a 1000 AX that sold through Wal-Mart stores for a short time (same as the SX) - http://www.megley.com/photos/tandy/1000ax

And then there's one I still haven't figured out the background story, it's a "PC-1000", which an SL clone - http://www.megley.com/photos/tandy/pc1000

That Panasonic looks like it's based on the 1000TL, except the front-panel reset button, volume control, and input/output jacks have been removed. Without a close-up of the motherboard it'll be hard to tell whether its Tandy 3-voice/DAC audio capabilities have been downgraded to only playing through the built-in speaker, or removed entirely and reverted to standard PC speaker audio.

I'd never even heard of the AX before! Did it come with some special addon card or something that the SX didn't, or was it just a rebadge of the same thing?

I notice that that CF-150b comes with a backlight, where the 1100FD that I just picked up doesn't come with one, but looks like it has provisions for it.
