Hello all,I'm kinda new to the vintage gaming thing and I have been looking around for an old computer to do some dos gaming on but I am not sure what I should be looking for,I've tried those emulator's on my computer running windows xp and it seemed so so,a friend of mine told me to get a machine with a wavetable sampling soundcard so you can do your own soundtracks to the games?this sounds really cool but still it sounds like a slight learning curve,I've been checking around junk shops, craigslist ebay,I just saw this today and it looks really cool, but then again I'm not really sure of what I'm looking at either, what would the seasoned gamer go for, would this rig do it?

That is a GREAT PC for DOS games. I would reccomend you get it since it has so much stuff with it. Then you can also get a Commodore 64 for soem good games too. whatever you want is up to you, though I reccomend you get that PC. AST computers i've hard are ALWAYS great, though I've never had one :/

And welcome to The Vintage Computer Forums!

Very nice soundcards i would love to have the terratec, the only thing i would replace is the HD, much to small even when you only use DOS and games i think you will run out of space very fast.

DOS games i really liked was

*DOOM*, *DUNE(strategic)*, *UFO enemy unknown*,*Civilization*, *Syndicate*, *Elite*, *Warcraft*, ***Ultima Underworld*** gave me the most thrilling game experience i ever felt it is a master piece in pseudo 3D, ****Dark Sun shattered land**** what a gaming experience.

Don't forget classics first shooters like Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem 3D and **DOOM**

The Sierra games, i liked Leisure suit Larry best serial best, Space Quest series is ok i can't say i played all. There is probably very good games from SSI i never played but Dark Sun!!!! you must play and Ultima Underworld!!!!! probably other Ultima titles very good if you like more simple adventures with still graphic.

Edit: Oh i forgot another classic, i am not sure this was published for PC Battletech The Crescent Hawk's Inception i had ATARI 1040 when i played it.

Fast recreational game and strategic game play i recommend Prince of Persia , Defender of the Crown, Grand theft auto, Warlords, Populos.

That is what comes to my mind right away, i think your harddrive full right there.

Get a CF to IDE adapter with two slots, one for backup and a second for gameplay. If you have two ide channels you can still use your HD and CD.
To use two 8GB CF memories should not present any problem, but the tech guys here knows better.

New 8 GB's only cost 20 euro here in sweden.

Damn, viewing that ebay page got me a little sentimental. My First PC was an AST Bravo 4/25sx with an onboard Mach32 graphics card. It used the exact same case design as the one on the ebay page.

I first learned how to hot rod a 486 with that machine. I had a Evergreen 75mhz 5x86 upgrade cpu, 48mb ram, a 2gig hd dual bootable between dos and Windows 95, A Sound Blaster 16, and a 4x CD-Rom, all done over a period of 3 years, then she was stolen out of my storage building along with my vintage Altec 755a ( try looking those up, I had 4) speakers 8 years ago.
