e-mail client for the PC

Does anyone know if there is a email client for DOS that will run on my XT and support multiple accounts? I have a Gmail.com account which is my main account an AOL.com account and a Freenet.de account.
I would be fine if it can only support one account but I absolutely need something that will work with gmail and Ethernet as I don't have a physical phone line to hook a modem up to...
 
While there are DOS e-mail clients for real-mode systems, I don't think any of them support SSL which you would need for gmail. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen one.
 
If that's the case, you could proxy gmail using e.g. NGINX to offload the encryption. Though really if you're going to do that, you may as well just use a terminal emulator I suppose.
 
An XT system typically has 640 KB of RAM (if you are lucky and have the machine maxed out), and a 4.70 MHz CPU. That is slow, you know. But I have done email on such a beast, using the DOS program NetTamer, which specifically has (had?) a "XT version". And it was slow... I did it using a modem and dial-up, I don't know if NetTamer can piggyback on an ethernet card, probably not.

Mail only requires a minimum of RAM. If you're a real minimalist you can of course use Telnet to get, ever write, your mail. But using a mail transport agent is better. That'll work just fine even if you only have a 360 floppy for your OS and programs. Use Michael Mefford's DM (from PCmag) as the reader. Any directory reader like xtree etc, will work, but DM is the best. So, what MTAs are around that are suitable? Here's a couple for you. I'd almost forgotten about that web page (even though it's mine).

I did use Nettamer for a long time, way back when. I probably have some of the older and smaller versions tucked away somewhere if you can't find them. It is not a small program though, and there is no way to get it to work with ethernet - it's dialup only. What a great program though, and uncle Colston did a great service - especially to the blind community who used it for years after the rest of the world Went Woozy on Windows.™

I've never used Pegassus for DOS, but if I remember correctly it requires an external MTA. In fact one of the ones in my package above, but my memory is hazy on what I read there. In any event, Pegassus is just a front end. That's why I suggest using DM which is around 8K and just lets you arrow up/down and hit enter to read. Another one would be Vernon Beurg's LIST. That is one great lister and would be wonderful for e-mail.
