I have already mentioned here on the mountain trees fall constantly. And if they arent crushing my pickup trucks they are taking out power lines. I have a generator of course which is back up and running... But I also rely on UPS units for my major centers in the home. Primary desktop computers, work bench, Entertainment center. Most of the small ones are still up and running but the large one which runs my data closet (cable modem, router, patch panels and switches and my main Xeon computer) has died. That makes two which burned up since we bought the house.

I dont want a modern cheapo plastic one. Im just looking for a metal chassis REAL BACKUPs unit sans batteries since they cost to much to ship [I can buy batteries] Anyone have a line on where I can find one affordably or have one to sell? Again working with no batteries is what I am looking for.

thanks

Mick

I've got an old Elgar (1400W, maybe?) that's been sitting unused for a few years. Ran it from 4 12V lead-acid batteries. Huge transformer in it--probably will cost a fortune to ship, but it you want it, it's yours. That offer extends to the forum in general.

They'll probably work fine--I gave up on the AGM cells and used 4 12V garden tractor batteries. Charging voltage is clamped by a 50V 50W stud-mount zener. (I've got a spare just in case).
In any case, note that any UPS is just supposed to get you over the bumps (<1hr), unless you've got a monster of one. Heck, even my Internet service provider has less than a half-hour in the terminal battery (the state PUC granted them a variance for that).

Yes Im looking for a 1 hour buffer. That suits me fine. The buffer and mainly the voltage regulation are what I need.

I'm using APC SmartUPS 1500's I got as E-waste because they all need batteries. You can make them work happily with a pair of 12v 7Ah cells and I use exactly that to keep my cameras, PBX and fiber modem/PBX alive when the power fails.
I have a pair of the slightly later all-plastic narrow APC units to keep my SGI O2 from frying again and I have run into capacitor issues where they would always run on battery until they deplete, then it would shutdown, recharge and the next time you turn it back in it switches to battery again.

Yeah basically those are what I am hoping to find.

Be careful with some APC models. I’ve got a 15 or so year old XS1000 and XS1500 that both have developed an issue where they refuse to detect when the mains power has been restored. People online suggest that it’s a capacitor issue, but I haven’t tried fixing it myself yet.

That's the issue I mentioned above. It was indeed an RS series of unit.

I have a couple of those as well, acquired about 10 years ago. Very nice units. I slightly reduced the float voltage in order to extend battery longevity.

They were in use until I retired. In retirement, I am 'watching the pennies', and the 1500 draws about 30W for itself sitting in standby. So I moved my desktop computer to an APC CS 650. At mains failure, the 650 comfortably provides enough time for the computer to be shut down, and then I move the computer to a lithium-ion based backup power solution.

Yeah, I know--it's a pure sinewave output unit, with a monster transformer. 6 outlets. Well, if I can find a steal on 4 12 volt batteries, I may put it into service again some day if I can't get rid of it. Hate to see it go to the scrappers, as it was a very good unit in its day.

Im sure its a phenomenal unit. I just went to look up some info on it. But Coast to coast transit isn't easy or cheap. You have the weight. I can give you my zip again. If you wanna get some quotes from fedex let me know.

Fedex--never. It'd probably be LtoL truck freight. Might make sense if you were closer, but I've investigated freight charges before and they go up incredibly when you cross the Continental Divide.

Maybe a regional thing. Fedex is far better over here than UPS. IS it the weight? I constantly ship boxes out that cross the 50lb mark sometimes almost 70 lbs. 20" to 24" cube boxes.
