Follow Up question to "Ancient Hardware In A Modern Computer

First of all, thanks for the replies, given to my question below.

I just thought of another question:

Can I copy these Word Perfect 5.1 files directly to the "My Documents" folder of 98SE, and then then have Microsoft Word convert them to Word format,

OR

Do I need to install Word Perfect 5.1 (I have the software although mom's 386 went by by years ago, before she passed away.), and then copy the files onto WP51, and then pull them manually from WP51 to Word, convert them to word format, and then store then in the "My Documents" folder?

or perhaps easier yet, can I take one of my XT's, or 286's with a 1.2mb floppy, load WP51 onto the hard drive (if it doesn't have it already), and then copy the files into Word Perfect, and then using "LapLink" transfer the files from one computer to the other? The only concern I have there is it appears that it would result in a totally DOS application, unless I was able to copy from WP51 directly to "My Documents" of 98SE.

Any thoughts?

The first alternative you gave.

You can put the WP5.1 files in any convenient folder on your hard disk, not just "My Documents". No need to bring Word Perfect into the picture at all. MS Word should be able to read them--if not, there are converters available on the net.

As of I know, yes, yes and yes. All of it will work, but the second and third one will take some time.

My advice is to take the 1.2Mb 5.25" drive from your XT, and move it to your 98SE (you'll of course move it back to the XT when you're done!), set the CMOS settings accordingly (on the 98SE machine of course), then you will have the 1.2Mb drive as drive A: or B: in the 98SE computer.

Even thoug it is 1.2Mb, it'll read 360Kb disks too.

From here, it's just plain copy & paste, and then convert.
 
just a note -
"Open Office" will (apparently) open word perfect documents, I've not tried WPDs myself, but it seems to open most things (doors, beans etc), and it's free.

No good. I tried opening a WordPerfect 5.0 document with Open Office and it didn't work. I think that it can only open WP for Windows documents. I kind of doubt that any recent word processor can read WP for DOS documents. His best bet is to just install WP 5.1 on his Windows 98 machine.

When I bought an 8bit NIC Card, I wanted to see if the card would work in a high end (using those words lightly) system using Windows..

When testing this card, I left the card as is before changing any settings, assuming whomever had it before me, probably used it and had it properly set, wronggggggggggg...

This is how things went:

Windows XP locked up (no surprise there)
Windows 2000 did the same as did Windows 98.

Hmmmm ok... not good

So.... what do I do next...

I stick it in a computer that has Linux, and low and behold, the card doesn't lock this OS up (no surpise there), but.... on the boot up sequence, flashing by the CRT screen, my gelenatis orbs see something odd, the card apparently
is memory sharing... something Windows doesn't inform you of.

The card was sharing the same memory address as the floppy controller, something windows obviously didn't like and decided to do what it can only do for you, lock up crash and puke.

Back to Linux... even though this card was sharing the floppy controller, and Linux said it was, this OS didn't lock up crash and puke, it kept going along on its marry way, it took Linux forever to pick up an IP with this memory conflict, but at least the OS worked and told me it was sharing, unlike Steve "the used car salesman" Balmer's Windows OS.

I eventually got the setup program to properly configure the card, and it worked ok in Windows 3.11.

Well, I'd try it first for sure; I move WP5.1/DOS files to Win Word all the time and have not had any problems with up to and including the latest I've used (2002), definitely not with Word 97.
