There used to be one about 6 or 7 years ago, with an 0800 number to dial - but you had to bear some ads on the screen. It was a breakthrough back then! I don't think anything like that exists today, apart from free WiFi in various cafe bars.

I still use free dialup net zero and juno for my laptop. Its limited to 10 hours a month each, but it's good as a backup

With free dial-up, are you thinking of a service where you pay a local minute fee, but no extra costs for using the modem pool, or should the phone number you call also be of the variety that is completely free to dial? I'm thinking that the number of modem pools, free or not, is declining. In particular those who have a monthly subscription, maybe emergency pools charging a higher than usual minute fee can live on a little longer.

If things haven't changed w/ Juno w/in the past 3 years (as in the last time I used it), & if it has some division in the UK, Juno should still be free, but I think it disconnects after 5 or 15 minutes of being idle. Pretty fast for free dial-up though...
Also, try using the computer you have w/ a WLAN card in various parts of your house if you have close-by neighbors. Where my computer is, I can pick up 2 unencrypted routers

You can't go a single week with out spouting off something illegal can you?
Just for the record, "War Driving" and using your neighbors Access Point is Illegal and is now concidered a 3rd degree Felony in most states. Don't even bother trying......

Yes, even if it is unencrypted. That just proves the AP owner is stupid. It carries such a heavy penatly becuase it give you access to personal LAN's and computers where sensitive info is stored, like CC and SS numbers. The FBI really frowns upon doing such things. Its only ok if its public access like in a park or cafe or something where its offered as a service to customers. Sitting in a car war driving or stealing it from a neighbor is a naugty no-no.....

I see a couple of points here that could be bound together.
1) neighbor has unencrypted router
2) nieghbor has grass to be cut and a network needing securing.
Sounds to me like you should offer to cut his grass and secure his network for access to it. Make friends! Then it would be authorised by the owner and he would be getting somethign in return. Teach the guy/gal how to basically secure his router and computer, and help him/her out with it.
Yes, I'm one of those strange, social city people cause I was transplanted from the country. So I guess that makes me a redneck in city slicker's clothing :D
Plus your neighbor would be grateful that a "good guy" came and offered the service to fix it in return for measley access (just don't abuse it and hog all the bandwidth) instead of finding out he got cracked by a bad guy and the mess has to be cleaned up.

I already have broadband, I want dialup for all those computers that wern't made in the last 10(?) years...Getting a DOS machine on the net should be fun. And my Mac classic when I fix it. Or get a new one.
I could technically connect to next doors wirelessy, but I like our neighbours and it doesn't really seem fair, he pays for it an all and I just take it for free, t'aint right

And a wireless network, no matter if it is yours or your neighbour's, won't help you with vintage computers without Ethernet interfaces.
Maybe you can use a serial cable and use a PC as a middleware server? I suppose even if you use dial-up, these computers barely support PPP or whatever protocols modern modem pools offer to their customers.
