The instructions say to install a switch that allows you to switch modes (autoboot ROM or standard ROM). I'm looking for info on where others have placed the switch for their FreHD autoboot ROMs in Model 1s.

I'm thinking that having a pigtail on the switch that allows it to be plugged disconnected without having to fully remove the switch may be beneficial, in case there's a need to open up the Model 1 and do work on it.

If you don't want to cut a hole in your Model I, just hang the switch out the back of the computer next to the bus connector and just dangle it under the computer.

You rarely use the switch so if the case is mint it's probably best not to drill holes in it. If by chance it already has holes and extra switches then meh... another hole won't hurt.

Does the "press the spacebar" trick not work for the M1?

It does not. There's a wire on one pin of the ROM that has to be run to a switch. That switch feeds that pin either +5 or pulls it to Ground, to control which mode the ROM is running in.
