General Gripes about the New Board

Strange, I have sat idle at the fourm of half hours at a time working in another browser tab, and it never does anything to me. Did you check the "Log me in automatically every time I visit" box? I think thats how it keeps me from timing out.....

Me too.

Is it possible to upper the limit for timeout cookies?

The current inactivity setting is 900 second (15 minutes) which seems about right. It impacts a few things including the "who's online list" and message read markers.

I could bump it up a bit, but I think that telling the forums to keep you logged on is the best solution.

Pretty Good - though I found I could store more messages
(threads) on the old system cause I had to delete many (about
20) of the PMs which I had on this one - before I could post
anything.

The other hassle was the length of the PMs - on the old
system, I could write til the cows came home - but now it's
restricted by so many words. But hey - that's just me, I'm a
compulsive writer.

I can fix both of those. . . to an extent, anyway. :)

Both numbers have been doubled. You can now store up to 100 PMs and type up to 10,000 characters in each.

Enjoy!

Hm, ok. So if I enable "always logged in", there will not be any timeout cookies?

I'm pretty sure that's how it works, yes.

Otherwise, auto logout is after 15 minutes of inactivity.

It just struck me; this vBulletin board has no immediate buttons to PM people at the end of each message. Both phpBB and Invision boards typically have, depending on the forum configuration I suppose. Also, I'm unsure if the other means of contact (if the user has instant messaging, accepts e-mail etc) displays in context of the messages, but that is of limited use.

Is the PM button something that is easy to add, and would people prefer to have it? (e.g. next to the quote and fast reply buttons) Or maybe there is a display mode of this board that is changable in the settings, and I'm currently using the spartan display mode? In particular in the Trading area, I think an immediate way to PM without going through the profile might make it more clear that you shouldn't just reply to the thread with your offer or personal questions.

Hmmmnn...seems like I just posed the same question (privately) about a week ago. Seems that the closest you can come is to click on the user's name, and pm them through that menu, but there seems to be no way to link the pm to the original post.

I just find it easy to click on the name of the person you
want to PM & "Select Send a PM to..."

As for the other methods of contact I'm not sure - perhaps
those are available through the same menu for people who are
contactable through those.

The PM button is slightly decieving for someone who's new to
forums I must admit.
