Had a "good ???" Scare Last Night: Adventures in Setting Up the Model 3 to Autoboot

Yesterday I received a package from Australia, thank you Ian, with my new Auto Boot ROM, two key caps (I need to send/post pictures of the keyboard, cause there are still issues) and a drive door. So my project for last night (since my fiber internet crashed) was to install the ROM.

Everything started out fine until I pulled what I thought was U106 (actually it was U105) and put the new ROM in the U105 position, fired up the machine (with FreHD unplugged) and everything was working, shut down, plugged in the FreHD and while I was between rebooting I happened to reread the installation instructions and suddenly had a nagging suspicion that something wasn't right.

Went and got a brighter light and to my horror, I saw my error. Pulled the Boot ROM from U105 and then started the pin straightening dance finally got the pins straightened and inserted U105 back in it's correct position. Pulled U106 and again engaged in doing the pin straightening dance with the FreHD ROM and got it inserted.

Now comes (what I hoped for) the final smoke test. What !!! Garbage on the screen !!! Shut everything back down and started rechecking the pins on U105 and U106 hoping that I had not killed anything on the MB. Found that I had a folded under pin on U105, pulled it and again the pin straightening dance (very carefully cause I was now afraid I would break it off) got it back in and rebooted everything and said a prayer to the IC Gods.

Booted up finally to LDOS floppy but wouldn't auto boot. Went back reformatted the SD card but in rereading the instructions noted that I had not given the FreHD SD a name so gave it a name, recopied the rom files and Volila it works !!!!!

Good to hear you got it going. I think we've all been in that situation where a pin bends under an IC, it looks Ok but the bloody computer doesn't work...

Good result
