I need help on a PSU capacitor. Some background, I aquired a fantastic Heath PC, from a guy on craigslist, apparently a kit built by his father. A really nice find, with manuals, disks, monitor and keyboard. $50!

I immediately took the cover off to check the insides like a kid at christmas - all looks good, cmos battery was a coincell so no problems there.

Next I checked the power supply, the dreaded RIFA line filter caps were right there with splits in the poly but not burnt out. These are now replaced with new caps.

That was when I saw this big grey monster capacitor, full of cracks. Do you think I should risk it ?
The label on top reads A-11827-04. What would be the replacement?
I did not get anything from google.
The Heath documentation treats the psu as a module with no details. PSU is Heath part number (HE) 234-671

Nobody ? Right I’m too chicken to turn it on, so I’m desoldering it.

I did find the psu details for the Z-100 on minuszero degrees. And details for the Z-150…. But for the Z-148 ? Surely there was a service manual for the 234-671 ?

I suspect this is a smoothing capacitor for the 5V/12V that goes to the floppy drive molex connectors?

Zenith put out a service manual for the Z130 -Z140 series computers but as you stated, no schematic for the power supply.

I have a Zorba 2000 computer that has a bad video circuit that took out the power supply. I couldn't repair the PS so I found a new more modern one that output the same voltages and installed it.

I'll chime in.....my thought is if it's not bulged or leaking, could be just the outer coating (enamel or epoxy maybe) has cracked with age. Disconnect the supply from drives & motherboard and fire it up and see what happens. Follow manual for testing & voltage check of PS.

Stupid question time. Are you certain that the big round gray thing is a capacitor? My guess would be a potted transformer, since I don't see any others on the PCB. What does the solder side of the PSU PCB look like?

I agree with this. How many leads are soldered onto the board from it?

I'd put it together and try it if I were me. I am 90% sure that's not a capacitor and is indeed some kind of potted inductor.
