Well, I have been lurking long enough, and seems time enough to ask some tech support questions So now seemed the perfect time for an intro post.
I purchased an IBM 5170 out of Florida for running games but mainly vintage accounting software (guess what I do) for fun. Type 2 motherboard, 6 Mhz processor, Phoenix AWARD BIOS, "dead" seagate 30 mb HDD that sounds alright, 512 kb on board, and came with a monochrome monitor.
Since then the power supply let out 80's movie electricity sounds and smoke. I got a "Tested" replacement that has held up. I have added an advantage EGA card rendering EGA on my IBM 5153 (also newly acquired) at lower res. My advantage (existing) ram expansion went from 896K to not detected real fast. An Everex EV-159 has worked wonders while I wait for 2 mb more of chips to arrive. I have just gotten stable enough to boot 9 out of 10 times from an XTIDE but that has been a struggle. Especially when you don't realize working from a DOS 3.3 floppy won't see the 128 mb CF card.
Memory is next on my agenda, but that is for a different post. Every program seems to be "too big to fit into memory" at 613K conventional free on the IBM 5170 but testing the integrity of said programs on DOSBOX on my windows 10 PC, they all seem to run flawless (at 632K free) and I am unsure if that means I have a physical issue or a configuration issue. More to follow 100%
Look forward to being here and finally contributing to the community.
