Hi everyone,

I was searching the web for info at lunch time and ran into the forum, and had to join. :D I'm a 44 year old Network admin for a small manufacturing company in Southern Vermont, and I live in Southern New Hampshire. I have been using and working on PC's since the early 80's.

My current project is my orginal IBM PC/XT, and I am rebuilding a number of vintage Macs. I tend to find it a bit relaxing to work on Dos systems, after mucking around in Windows all day. My wife and kids think I am crazy (of course) for working on the stacks of old Computers I have collected.

I plan to have a lot of items to clean out, trade or just plain give away.

Look forward to meeting everyone.

Is Juan Valdez still alive? :p I joined this forum fairly recently myself. Seems like my kind of computer freaks. And, no, I don't miss using my 300 baud acoustic coupler. If I still owned it, bet the rubber would be powder now.

Leading Edge? Wow, my 1985 LE was ONLY $3000 - $1500 for the computer and another $1500 for the 20 MB hard drive. Man, this has always been an expensive hobby. I actually used LE Nutshell for a few stupid projects. I'm also into astronomy and was going to use Nutshell to setup a star database. I stopped when I figured out how much work the data entry would be.

Hello and welcome to the VC Forums.

Of course your family thinks you're crazy. That's what they are there for.

Enjoy!

:) I hated Nutshell.... but I used it a lot, even after I left LE... it was a ok database, but the tech support calls tended to drive me a little nuts... I loved LEWP 1.5a. Leading Edge was a fun job, except you were always worried that your whole department was going to be let go any sec...:???:

You gotta admit, at the time the Model D was DAMN cheap compared to any other clone with the same features. I ran several of them long before I took my job at LE.

Hello MrCoffee! Welcome to the Vintage Computer Forum! I like your handle, as coffee is my favorite beverage. I think of it as my "liquid motivation" in the morning! :)

Hey chuckcmagee, you think computers are an expensive hobby, you should try Amateur Radio! I can't begin to tell you how many thousands of $$$ I've put into my "shack", and I have a low-end one! In addition to all of the other radios I have, I'm currently building a low-power (QRP) CW-only transceiver (Elecraft K1), which after all was said and done, cost me a tad over $600. My next full-featured "rig" (ham-speak for radio) looks to be the Icom IC-756 Pro III, which costs around $3,000.

I'm in to amateur Astronomy as well, but can't stand the mosquitos we have here in Florida. My goal is to build an observatory in the back yard, complete with remote opening doors, and have a nice 14" - 16" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope in it that I can control from the comfort of my office. Hey, if the professionals can do it, why not us amateurs?

Yo Coffee dude...welcome! :)

I don't know how it got into the thread, but I have one of those early Leading Edge Peeceez. The model M, not the later and much more popular model D. Also known as the Sperry Peecee, it had an optional dual graphics card similar to the IBM PGA (I guess). I know it had an onboard 6845 (unlike the PGA), but may also have had an 8088 or whatever for extra horsepower. I almost secured one...
