My name is Jeff, I'm on the high side of 40 and I live SW of Atlanta. I've been to the site off and on for a bit and wanted to finally join up. My first admission is that I am NOT a "computer guy", per se. However, my business offers a lot of tie-ins with this forum. I started an electronics recycling business a couple years ago when the construction business tanked and going on unemployment wasnt an option for me. Its been a great adventure and I've been blessed mightily. I do not work on or repair computers, just mainly take them apart, separating components for proper recycling instead of seeing them go into the landfill. In the past, I have also been involved with antiques as one of my passions. Naturally I realized that a lot of people still love their old computers and a quick search led me here.

I dont think I can offer anything to the forum in terms of technical knowledge. However, I come across a lot of equipment that I believe has a nostalgic value to people that love older computers. I sell a lot of newer stuff on eBay, but there is something about having a more "personal" transaction with people that really value some of the older things I come across. This forum could be a great way to pair old equipment with people that can appreciate them. Its saddening to see some of the items people are willing to throw away when there are people out there that would die to own them.

I will scan the wanted ads and see if I have anything people are looking for. At some point I'll even list some of the treasures I have in my warehouse. I get stuff like Apple IIGS Woz editions, Kaypro unit with magazines, Molecular Computer from early '80's still in original box, tons of IBM stuff (some still new in boxes, unused), etc. I love the old stuff and researching it, but my abilities end there as I dont have the expertise to know what to do with it (tech noob here). Look forward to getting to know you guys better.

Great forum, glad to be here!

Welcome rEcycler. Pretty much anything early 80s is very desirable and anything pre-Pentium will be of interest to some folks. Bear in mind though, that desirability doesn't always equate to high monetary value. Collectors aren't always rich and will often trade among themselves for very low prices. I'm not saying you can't realize some good money here but it likely won't be a gold mine. Ebay prices are not something to compare with and are often way out of line with the real prices paid in the vintage world. That said, you'll certainly get some satisfaction of being able to do real value recycling, and you definitely will have many people's support.

Stick around. Who knows, you might catch the bug yourself. Some us actually use these old beasts and it's great fun. Much like driving a model T Ford. Post some pictures. We like those. :)

Thanks Juul! As I said, I've been blessed to have a thriving business that pays the bills and feeds me and family (wife and 3 girls). While I like to make money on my transactions, it is not a driving force when it comes to the old stuff. I like the expression of people that find that treasure they have been looking for for years...it's priceless. Kind of like seeing the look on kids faces at Christmas :) I'll try to get some photos on soon when time permits (hahaha....I need 28 hour days and 8 day weeks to make that happen!). Its also rewarding to see stuff being reused after all these years. I used to scrap out stuff in the early days that now I kick myself for. For example, who knew that there was a substantial market for 5.25 floppy drives??? Now I keep an inventory of these things and try not to think of how many I've "disposed" of!
