Hiding email addresses in PMs?

Someone reached out to me via PM, and since the message was empty (big surprise), I replied and told them that I couldn't read the PM and to please email me. I included my email address.

The individual managed to track down an alternate email address for me in order to let me know that the PM system decided to hide the email address I included. If I wanted my fscking email address hidden, I wouldn't have typed it out! Is this a setting I can change, or is this yet another mis-feature included with the new "upgrade"?
