Hello everyone.

I have just changed over my inlaws perfectly working PS-1 to a new Windows 7 unit and would like to transfer some of the data from the PS-1 hard drive. I have an external 'combo usb 2.0 sata & ide' case. Can I remove the hard drive from the PS-1 and put it in this external drive and read data from my vista computer?

Or should I just use the PS-1 to copy to the 3.5" disks drive then attach an external USB diskette drive to my vista unit?

Thanks for your help.

it should be a standard ata drive in the ps1...

you can network it with file and print sharing if you have at least win95... just need to share from the ps1... and install the netbui protocol on both machines as win7 will use tcpip by default...

later,
Chris

Or do both. First back up the critical data to floppies before removing the hard disk. If something goes wrong, you still have a second copy of the data. Pins can break, something might short, who knows what surprises lurk.

Which model of PS/1 do they have? Someone may be able to recognize any special failings of that model.

Most of the PS/1s I know of use standard IDE drives and should work with most IDE adapters. I have had a cheap IDE external enclosure that would not work with 10+ year old IDE disks so it is not certain. But if the enclosure does work, it will be much much faster than copying off a bunch of floppies.

if the drive is larger than 500 mb it should work. i have never had much luck with harddrive smaller than 500mb.

A word of caution from some one who did exactly this about 6 weeks ago. BACK UP THE DRIVE BEFORE YOU TRY TO COPY IT. I thought I would be smart and take the drive out and use an external USB IDE adapter to transfer files. I was transfering it onto a 2gz system running XP Pro. While this IDE USB adapter has worked fine on everything including Ghost and such, when I accessed this drive it could not read or identfy the drive. Hmmmm. So it went back into the old system. Now the drive was scrambled and the old system could not read the drive. No recovery would work. Now the drive could not be identified by any computer and I tried everything from a 130mhz P3 on up. I thought it might just be the drive so I duplicated the process using a 2gb drive. I killed it as well. There is something about the older drives that don't like the USB IDE adapter. Further any operating system below XP for some reason I can not figure out, is erratic when plugging into a USB ID adapter when moving data to XP or higher.

If anyone has an explanation for this please post.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestion so far. If it helps with further ideas - this PS-1computer is "Machine type: 2155 Model: 89P (SL-B).

To be safe I'm going to copy data files to diskettes first.
