Hi everyone,

I have just acquired one and its not working - battery damage to the video board.
Powers up, CRT OK (at least the heater is running) but four red LED's remain lit on the CPU board (they should all go out as I understand it).
Nothing on the display to help either.

The technical manual on bitsavers does not help indicate whet the LED's mean so I'm looking for some help please.

Does anyone know a few basic things about these machines:

1. What the 6 different LED's mean ?
2. Whether the batteries are needed to boot the machine ?

Thanks

While a board is damaged that way, it shouldn't be powered. If battery or capacitor fluid causes shorts, trying to power the device may cause more damage, making repairing it even harder.

I can't give you answers, but did you properly clean the board (removing the acid) and inspect/repair all damaged traces? Do all ICs have correct voltages and clock lines? Do you see address and data bus activity?

The Ni-Cd leakage is Alkaline as I recall and I have cleaned with a vinegar wash and subsequently IPA. I have not started an low level investigation until I can get insight into what the diagnostic LED's are telling me.

Appendix B of the Service Manual explains what the code means. Page 6-9 explains how to read the 4 parts of the flashing code. Each part is only displayed for 4 seconds so filming it might make catching the result easier.

The Service Manual can be downloaded at the HP Museum Australia - the only with a NET domain.

Got it - thanks

Confirmed what I already know the self test is failing the the video PCA region - so its repair or replace this battery damaged board.
