I did something bad. I dropped a screwdriver on this motherboard. It hit just right to take the top off U8 and expose the chip die inside.
Needless to say this chip is dead.
It is a MSL828S
You can see it pretty well in the first pic here: U8 is in the upper left just behind the co=processor socket.

I need some help sourcing a replacement.
Is there a modern equivalent? Or an older equivalent with a different number?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

Given its location, I suspect that this is a Mitsubishi M5L8288--Mitsubishi's version of the Intel 8288 bus controller.
Confirmed by the M5L8288 datasheet. The datasheet indicates that the clock can be up to 10 MHz.

The datasheet of the AMD made part also indicates a 10 MHz rating.
The datasheet of the Harris 82C88 shows 8MHz, 10MHz, and 12MHz rated variations.
The industrial and military variations of the Intel made part are rated at 8 MHz.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies !!

So what "exactly" should I be searching for on ebay or google to find a replacement ??
Just M5L8288 ? or is the the "s" needed? Maybe just "8288"
This board was running at 8Mhz, fyi
Again thanks !

Datasheets tell all. Here's an eBay auction calling it a "Fairchild" part, even though the IC has "FUJITSU" printed quite clearly. At any rate, this one's rated for 10MHz according to the datasheet. There were lots of vendors of this particular IC.

It is a 8288 bus controller.
You don't have to replace it with the Mitsubishi M5L8288S part. Any 8288, and perhaps even 82C88 would do.
Some parts and manufacturers:
Intel P8288, AMD P8288, Intel D8288, AMD D8288, NEC uPB8288, Siemens SAB8288AP
Intel P82C88-2, Harris/Intersil CP82C88, OKI M82C88-2

As you do it, I'd recommend installing a 20-pin DIP socket.
