Hello, I have an IBM PC 340 (P166). I've swapped the old CD-ROM drive (8x) with a newer 40x. But when I turn the machine on, the screen remains blank, and after a few seconds it starts to produce one continuous beep.
When I disconnect the IDE cable from the drive, it starts up normally.
What could this be? BTW the drive light does turn on and it opens/closes normally.

Wrong master/slave setting would not cause a blank screen and an error beep. If that happens when connecting a CD-ROM, something with that CD-ROM is terribly wrong. Try a different one.

The IDE bus is directly attached to the address bus. OK, only three address bytes but only one has to be corrupted by a bad IC inside the CD-ROM and nothing will work.

Is the IDE cable keyed? If an IDE cable or device is not keyed and the cable header attached 180 degrees in the wrong direction, it won't boot.

This can happen if you use old IDE cables from the pile in your lowest desk drawer. I've had devices with TWO cutouts for keys.

Or... has a pin been bent over in the controller port or device port? Rare, but possumble.

Not that I would ever be stupid enough to put on a cable so Pin 1 does not align, but I had a friend ask me a question one day...
