Hello, i finally obtained IBM 5140, of course without any warrianty. I connected compatibille power supply and turn it on. Display shows nothing but there are error beep code - 1 long 1 short (system board error? )
and first floppy drive led light is on, then it powers off.
Questions:
1) What can i do?
2) Why my model doesnt have composite output?
3) How to hell can i open this machine? There are no screws or something...i only removed keyboard, thats all what i can do..
4) How can i test system board? I cant connect POST card or something there...
5) Why there is not support for 5140s on minuszerodegrees.net? All others IBM PCs are there...

Thanks

Nice, but nothing about diagnostic/repair. In my opinion, 5140 will be hardest to diagnostic or repair, it is not standard IBM PCs motherboard, no standard 64/256k memory chips, no ISA slot, not support for Landmark Supersoft ROMs...
Modern support for this computer is terrible...

Shouldn't the beep codes be the same as the 5160?

As far as the composite output goes, you need the special CRT adapter for the 5140 (#4020). The planar does not contain a CRT controller--just an LCD one.

There are slight differences in beep codes between the various members of the IBM PC family. The 5140 adds a battery warning of 3 short beeps. Best to always check with the proper Tech Ref.

Will it work? The only similar gadget I can find which lists requirements is at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3XT1DA9509 If I correctly tracked down the dates of the BIOS versions referenced, the earliest BIOS it will work with is from 1999 which likely means it will not work with a 5140. Your device may be different; maybe you will have more luck tracking down the correct support information.

Ok i founded this

1 Long, 1 short and power off is exactly my problem.

So, it is RAM, ROM or RTC problem. In my opinion it is not RAM. I have 3 modules (2x128 + 1x256) i tried all three separately and no change

Ok, new facts here. I sent computer to my friend which is much better electrician than me (i am realy not) . He found lot of wire breaks causing trickle out acid from battery (cca 10-15) and one bad transistor and one capacitor. It was a lot of work repair it all, but finally, computer came to life. POST was without any errors, memory too. DOS 3.30 bootet without any problems. Until later, i found one critical error.

Where is the problem? I tried to run some diagnostic sofware to make sure that all is ok. I tried IBM PC 5140 diagnostic disk, no problems, no errors. Then ChceckIt version 3.0. Loading screen with basic informations ran fine, but then freeze. Same at Checkit version 4.1. I tried also Norton Sysinfo, nothing only freeze. I tried run some simple dos games, without problems. But all diagnostic softs freeze. Finally i launched CheckIt 2.1 without freeze. Also launched system board test, and found the error.

It seems like DMA controller is corupted. I wrote that to my friend and he measured all wires and connections from and to DMA chip. He found nothing interrupted.

Any ideas to next step?

well, i dont see any interest here...
ok, it works now

but i have one problem, when i connect serial/paralel adapter, i get error message 5101. Error 5101 is "Portable printer interface failure" but why? I dont have any portable printer adapter, only serial/paralel adapter and serial/paralel have totaly different error code number..

PS.: any 5140 owner? I have some questions...
