Computer Reset has the adapter, but it's probably expensive. They're out of the monitors though.
The PGA adaptor that you aren't interested in actually takes three slots. Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" talks about what it can do (it has it's own microprocessor). But you'd need software written to take advantage of those features to use them.
Anyway, since the PGA to VGA conversion involves driving the monitor with an analog signal, you should be able to display as many colors as your card can output.
I always thought it would be neat to have a 5170 IBM PC/AT with a 486 motherboard and a PGA monitor to run Windows 3.1 and Office.
