Is this the CF card reader I need for IBM PS2 model 30 286?

I bought a version of this from TexElec: https://texelec.com/

When I installed the card and booted from a floppy to DOS 5 I was able to run fdisk and format the CF card. (I used a 1gb card which is probably not ideal...it's a little too big and slows things down in certain DOS directory operations, at least at first.)

Once the drive was formatted I was able to install DOS and it worked perfectly. So in my experience it was pretty straightforward.

Is this the one I need, when my HDD sooner or later fails, and I need to boot onto a CF card instead?

If so. How do I set the computer to boot onto the CF card? Do I set boot sequence with the System Disk? How does this work?

yes that one will work. you set up the system with the IBM starter diskette, but the XT IDE bios does the rest :)

Seems kind of expensive to me. I got a similar one all the way from China for around $10US.

I HIGHLY doubt what you purchased was an XT-IDE for $10 otherwise send me a link and i'll buy 20 of them..

what you probably got from China is an IDE-CF adapter which WILL NOT work in a PS/2 Model 30 286 without a separate 16bit IDE controller with another card that has an XT IDE Boot rom. (network card boot rom socket for example)

the PS/2 Model 30 Does not support just any old IDE device

Okay, here's your link: https://www.eio.com/products/syba-s...h3916lTxpCiwWZJBE3TnZHxraGu4CKSgaAkw2EALw_wcB

Works with just about any CF card on an IDE controller. I'm not vouching for "any old" PS/2 however. Use an ISA EIDE controller with a BIOS on it like a SIIG.
