hey all! i was lucky enough to come in contact with a local fellow in possession of a working kaypro 2 and 2x he was looking to give to a good home, and i couldn't pass up the opportunity- i'll be picking them up wednesday. i've been doing a bit of reading since i am not all too familiar with CP/M, my main goal being to use one (or both) of them for daily retrocmp tasks, some of them involving LAN access. it seems like this should be possible via KA9Q or CP/Net- unfortunately i cannot find a copy of KA9Q's CP/M port, and while there are some instructions for getting CP/Net working, i am not sure if i could use them to produce a working install on either kaypro. i am also not sure if an RS232->ethernet adapter would work or if i would need something more exotic.

thanks in advance!

I've got CP/NET over the Kaypro serial data port here: http://sebhc.durgadas.com/kaypro/cpnet12.tgz. For connecting to a modern PC (that has no built-in serial ports) you can use a RS232->USB adapter. It is theoretically possible to use a RS232->ethernet adapter, but note that that does not provide true LAN access, it only converts the RS232 data stream into a Telnet connection/stream - and the CP/NET server software is not setup to use that. There is some CP/NET documentation (along with software) here: https://github.com/durgadas311/cpnet-z80.

fantastic, thank you! i will give this a go when i have my machines and report back :)

i've been doing a bit more reading and it seems like i could also use tcpser for telnet access to my other machines, it seems like this would work with KERMIT/XMODEM?

and here they are, still yet to be named :>

Very nice. I never seem to get lucky enough to run into someone like this. :)

i've had a posting on the local craigslist offering to buy old hardware, software, and peripherals for a while now, i just renew it every so often. i don't get much interesting but i keep it up just in case, this was honestly the first big hit!

If you have an older PC with a 360k floppy you can create them on that too. Must you DD floppy though, not HD. This is how I created my boot floppy. It came with one but it would not boot. So I grabbed the correct boot image for my 2x system and made one. Of course I had informed the seller also of the issue and he sent me one that did work too. Good luck.

there are a number of disk images here, if you have a way of writing them like an applesauce or greaseweazle: http://www.retroarchive.org/maslin/index.html

For those like yourselves that are new to CP/M, this is a good starting point. Especially if your "new" CP/M machine didn't come with any disks, I'd recommend starting with the Maslin archive. To go further and really unleash the power of your computer, I'd recommend this as your next stop:

http://cpmarchives.classiccmp.org/

Odds are you won't run out of software to try out for QUITE some time.
