Y: yeah, don;t bother with eBay - I'll take care of ya! I should have a 2nd set of manuals for the K10. Haven't looked yet, as I buried those, knowing I wasn't unloading them first, if at all
I can probably do ya one for like $100-150. It'll be nice though, trust me
I know I can sell a finished-off 42MB K10 on eBay for WAY more, probably, but I gotta hook up a V-C brethren. I think these are one of the coolest CP/M machines around...
First off, try to buy THIS:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110164062894&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=001
Because the monitor on mine is twitchy, plus you'll have spare drives, and the original Kaypro carry case is worth the admission price alone...
Floppies LOOK different than factory K10's, but they'll be spares anyway...
Or use one of those, and yank the original k10 for storage.
Unless you have an EPROM burner, and LOADS of time, you'll want to send me the mobo of that machine I linked to, so I can build up your K10. Took me the past 3 days to figure it all out!
Here's the scoop:
What I have for ya, is a K10/83. so-so motherboard, 4K limit on EPROM, etc..
That K4/84, will have the universal motherboard, most likely on-board clock *AND* onboard 300 baud modem. yeah, yeah, I know....300 baud...we're going for a kick@ss K10, are we not? Might as well have the heated mirrors, and heated seat...
So, by moving THAT K4/84 motherboard into my K10/83 chassis, it's now effectively a K10/84. Mine has all the hard disk boards, so no prob there. That mobo ALSO has the interface for the HD, obviously.
Now, the 2nd reason you need THAT K4 MoBo (K4/84, to be exact) is that the ONLY aftermarket ROM I have is the Advent '84 TurboROM, which won't work in the K10/83 Motherboard. Well, I assume not, but you don't want that old MoBo anyway. Noone has found '83 TurboROM images, and the KayPLUS ROM is broken (on hard disk-based machines) for some reason.
3rd reason, is when (hopefully) the microcode consulting guys figure out what's wrong with the KayPLUS '84 rom, you wanna switch, because even though the TurboROM is great, the KayPLUS is even better. Will require a rformat, though.
4th reason, is unless you have the 2 hard disks Kaypro used (a Seagate ST-212 or MicroScience 10MB) you can't do much. With the Advent, I can pop in an ST-225, and ya got a 20MB Kaypro 10. Same with the KayPLUS, when it gets fixed.
<breath><breath>
As for labor charge, buy me some DS/DD 5.25" floppies. That's it
Also, you'll need some for your K10, so plan on sending me at least 20 floppies to write out for you. I need to make you a modified AutoLoad Disk #1, so you can restore if you, for example, pop in a different drive later, or play around and reformat it, etc... The AutoLoad is for the factory Kaypro apps, ie WordStar, MailMerge, CalcStar, DataStar, dBase II, etc... Backup boot disks, disks for the TurboROM, etc...
any questions?
Fire 'em off.
