Oddly enough the Mac powers on but immediately powers-off....seems it cannot stay on.
So far I have found that if you retain the power switch depressed (i.e. with a book) it stays on !
Any ideas?
 
Mechanical breakage in the switch, perhaps?
Some older machines (I don't know if the IIx is one of them) used to have a mains power switch with "press once to turn on, press again to turn off" functionality. This was usually handled in a mechanical way in the switch itself. If the plastic bits have broken...
 
Replace the two PRAM batteries - dead/weak ones can cause startup issues in the II/IIx.
