Miniscribe 8425 Activity light error code 0001 ROM Checksum

How do you dump these ROMs? I've got an 8438 with a busted hall sensor but the firmware should be fine

the 8438 was the RLL rated version of the 25.
i've attached the picture of the drive board you posted.
unfortunately, the firmware on the ST412 version of the drive is in the 40 pin microcontroller
and isn't easy to dump

Yup, thats why I'm asking... I have no idea what type of chip it is and how to access the firmware. If anyone has got any clues I'm willing to give it a go

I did some digging around, my 8425 uses a sc85298P so different rom
I have a schematic for the 5" 3650, they used a 6801 in that. I'll see if any of the pins match
It's possible to dump 6801s (I did that to dump the rom from a Corvus Omninet transporter)
now, I have to remember how I did it.

It would be interesting to see what parts are on the 3650 pcb (they flipped it so I haven't found
a picture of the component side) I think the design may be very similar

i just pinged compaqportable plus to see if he's take a picture of the 3650 he did a motor swap to.
Lots of nice pictures of the hda, but no board pictures

You could get piggyback eprom versions of the 6801, but at this point if you can't find an eprom
version of the part or a chinese used part vendor, all of this would just be a somewhat impractical exercise
for a 20mb hard disk

Ask and the pile of broken drives that I keep hoarding for some reason shall provide... here the broken 3650 brick which doesn't clear write fault, PCB attached...
SC85345P
010800023

EDIT: Schematics attached (3650 at the very end)... so what would I need exactly? The same part (SC85298P) or the 6801 with ROM socket?

dumping that one would be nice as well. you put the chip into self-test mode and it spits the rom out serially. I did this back in 2019 and I have to find my notes
I'm sure it's on the web somewhere too

ah... that's right Mattis came up with the circuit https://github.com/MattisLind/6801reader

I've hacked on the board several times since then to read 6805s in Non User Mode

Right. That 6801 reader project. Did you have any trouble getting it to work? Something I should add to the readme? A person contacted me about it and I tried to help as much as I could but he never managed to get it to work. He questioned the design but since I knew of at least one other person that managed to get it to work I just think he was completely clueless.

I got it to work, that's where the firmware dumps from the transporter microcontrollers in http://bitsavers.org/pdf/corvus/transporter came from

Oof, that looks a bit involved. I don't have any GALs nor have I ever programmed one.

I'm interested in doing it, but it will be on the backburner for a while, there are too many loose ends right now...

I know how that goes. Thanks for the board picture. Two of the three ASICS are identical between the 5" and 3" drive so there is enough to make some assumptions
on how the 3" drive works.
