Monitor for Amstrad PC1512

Hi. New here - hope this post is ok.

Have an elderly relative who has inherited and still uses my old Amstrad PC1512 for the occasional letter writing. However the (colour) monitor has developed a fault in that there is a sparking/crackle sound from the back.

I was wondering if there is any likelyhood that someone might still have one they are looking to get rid of.

Alternatively could this be a known fault that might be easily fixable??

P.S. Yes I know it is probably 20 years old

Is it still actually working with this noise ?, does the screen flicker with the noise. Could just be slight corona / arcing of the tube HT from years of accumulated dust inside. It might just be worth taking the back off and blowing it out with an air line, but not too close, don't want to damage any delicate components.

The screen did not seem to flicker and IS working although I did not leave it on for too long. (did not wait for the operating system to load) The noise was quite loud and occurred every 2 to 10 seconds. Might this fit with what you are thinking? I was planning on taking the back off to have a look and give it a dust but this will not be until I visit again later in the year.

Weird but, when I fired-up my Sanyo composite monitor day before yesterday, it did the same thing. I didn't open it up yet, but if I do so within the next few days, I'll report back with my findings.

That sounds like one of the capacitors on the circuit board has started to break down. The cracking noise will be the voltage tracking to earth.

I would strongly recommend that you get a TV repair guy to look at it; the voltages you find inside monitors can take no prisoners for the unwary...

Does anyone happen to know, specifically with the PC1512, whether the colour and monochrome monitors are directly compatible (i.e. swappable) with each other?

I might have a plan....

I have an Amstrad PC1640SD with EGA monitor that is heading towards eBay at the end of this month!

The monitor won't work on your base unit, but you could swap in the hard drive from your PC1512 (if it has one) without any problems.
