I downloaded an MS-DOS 5 bootdisk from bootdisk.com and noticed that typing dosshell does nothing. I'm running it from a floppy, is that the problem?

Nope. It should work from a floppy disk.

Have you made sure the actual DosShell program is on the disk?

DOS Shell only came with MS-DOS 5 and 6 full installations, not the bootdisks. You can shove dosshell.exe on the disk if you really want it though.

You can get a copy easily by looking for sup622.exe (MS hosts it) and extracting that - put dosswap.exe and dosshell.* into your floppy and off you go.

Got it from another PC, but when I unzip the .exe, those files are not executable and oddly enough, when copied to my DOS 5 boot disk, it gets rid of the command.com file.

Could've sworn I wrote a reply to this...

Anyway. The files on the disk are in Microsoft's compressed format, intended for use with the included EXPAND.EXE utility. (And the real intended use of the disk is to run "Setup.bat" and it applies the add-ons to a DOS installation.) Nothing you run in DOS should delete command.com (save for "del command.com" or "format x:") Sounds to me like you're having some kind of disk trouble.
