Lets see...
I have about 6 486s (~1992?), mostly in pieces since I like to reassemble things. I also have an apple ][c, mac SE, and a powerpc (unknown species actually, I haven't really gotten around to doing anything with it...though I feel there is some linux on its horizon). I just got a new Toshiba T3400CT laptop too.
I also have a stack of parts, some I know, and others I don't know, and I spend a fair amount of time setting up a system, installing a card, and then taking it apart again. (oh and a few of not so vintage machines).
Although I expect a fair amount of flak for it, I have to say I love my 486s. I am not really a collector (in the "is it in the original box?" sort of way), but I love to play with them out of sheer nostalgia. I can tell you I have as many file/print servers, routers, etc as anyone could need, and I am attempting to install every known OS on them.
My collection has cost me a total of $0, (also zero pounds sterling, zero pesos, zero marks, etc.) and I like that about it. I even picked up a couple of these machines after negotiations like this:
they: "I'll sell you my 486 for $10"
me: "no"
they: "$5?"
me: "no"
they: "how about for free if you pick it up?"
me: "ok"
what a hobby.
