Howdy howdy, people of the VC Forum! It's been ages since I last posted, or even checked the forums, but I really haven't had much of a reason to. Well, now I do.

Unfortunately, my parents broke up later last year, and my mom has just finished the process of moving out of my dads house. One side effect of this, is her sewing room, in all it's light-pink glory, is completely empty save the washer and dryer. It was decided that this would become my new computer room, to get stuff out of my 20'x20' bedroom since at the minute it's a mountain of beige boxes you have to climb over to get to my bed (ladies don't like that).

My room will simply house my "work" machines; a laptop or two, and my Shuttle with it's triple monitor setup. The computer room will be for vintage computers and fixing/working/storing stuff. (ooh, autosave feature in the forum, nice). I'm wanting to get some plastic folding tables and set them up running the remaining length of the wall, and mount some powerstrips on the wall for easy access. I'll probably get a router and DD-WRT it so it can act as a wifi-ethernet bridge to my wireless network, because I'm too much of a lazy sod to run cables.

So... yeah. That's about it. Not much interesting, and I'll only have it for a couple years (I'm edging ever-closer to 18, which brings me closer to moving out. joy.), but I thought I could just post anyways and make a couple of you jealous ;)

Apologies for the rubbish pictures. My phone was all I had on hand at the moment

Well sorry to hear about the parental issues but nice looking room. I did similar when I was young and keeping it cheap, just ended up buying (heck, I even bought them new which in hindsight I should have gone to a used place) some folding leg tables (a 7' and a 5') and made myself an L desk setup. Beyond that I could have done the college age cinder block and wood layers on top to add some shelves (works great actually) but I ended up buying an industrial multi shelf thing instead. Still it'll be nice to get some of that space in your room back I'm sure.

If you want to possibly impress your dad with your hobby and gain some additional support for your habb^H^H^Hobby try setting up a spare system with XBMC and connect it to the TV (if you have a loprofile or parent approved looking system) and you can set up a video streaming server with a graphical catalog. Or you could join the linux dvr movement (mythtv.org) if you had cable and a large hard drive and video capture card.

Just some ideas that may be fun but great experience at the same time.

Take a look at my other post in this subforum and you'll see what I believe to be a small PIII computer about the size of a pair of full-height harddrives, with component video out. This is becoming our HTPC, as I have an AVerMEdia card lying around for tv tuning purposes. I just with XBMC supported capture cards. Then again, that AVerMEdia card is probably too old and proprietary to work with anything but the Windows drivers...

Perhaps I'll just use it to play my library of Top Gear and Dr. Who .avis :)

I know about the parent moving routine as a dad. I moved out and separated from my wife because the house was hopelessly trashed. One of the only clean areas was the upstairs east bedroom and the basement where my computer workbench was. This small house is uncluttered but small. I really have to use my brain-power to find ways to efficiently use my systems. I finally cleared enough room in the enclosed back porch for a temporary arrangement. I'm slowed down but not stopped!
