About six months back I started thinking how cool it would be to have a nice collection of vintage big-box PC games. But I had just bought a house and was in the process of moving, and so could not afford anything special for mysel.
That turned out to be a good thing, because it turns out I already had one:
What's special about this collection is how it survived into the modern day. I thought all my old games were lost forever. While moving, I opened up a cabinet that had been blocked off for probably 10 years, inside I found a CD wallet full of games. Awesome! At least I have most of the disks! Up next, while clearing out an old closet, I found a box of jewel cases. Ok, more good news. THEN I discovered a box full of boxes, and knew a second such box must exist somewhere(because I remembered packing the second but not the first). I further found most of the manuals and inserts packed up into other places. I have no idea WHY I did this, but sometime in the past 10-15 years, I took all the CDs out and put them in a binder, then separated the boxes, manuals, and jewel cases.
The end result:
I'm aware I haven't got anything particularly rare or valuable, and the boxes aren't in good shape, but its really fun to put all this stuff back together. I've got a few more games without jewel cases or boxes, and some instances where paradoxically the box, manuals, and jewel case survived... but not the CD itself. Next year when I'm no longer house-poor I plan to rebuild the collection and pick up a few more.
