I'm at my wits end, maybe I'm missing something obvious here, don't know anymore.
Here's the scoop:
I have this piece of hardware, it's an older HP oscilloscope model 54845A, it runs on normal of the shelf PC hardware (mostly).
Mine runs windows 98, earlier versions of the same model run win 95, originally comes with a socket 7 mobo and AMD K6 CPU. I upgraded the motherboard to socket 370 intel 810 chipset and PIII@ 900Mhz . Now the software for this beast comes only in one form as a recovery image. Because of upgraded mobo/CPU I'm using recovery for 54845B model which I strongly suspect comes with intel 815 chipset mobo, close but no cigar in my case.
The recovery process is 2 stage, first the CD boots in DOS mode and runs a Norton Ghost that reimages the HD with the proper recovery image. I've checked and that DOS mode is from win 98 first edition ( version ends in 1998 ).
Now after ghost finishes you're supposed to power cycle the machine ( it has an AT type PSU), and after the reboot the install continues.
Unfortunately in my case the install crashes sooner or later, due to missing drivers, I can cancel most of the dialog boxes and even then in the end the nasty BSOD happens and I have to reboot.
After reboot all I get is "windows protection error" and the machine locks up.
I've downloaded a few version of drivers but I'm not even sure what version of windows I'm working with here?
I cannot check it the normal way as the install never finishes, I don't have acces to command prompt nor desktop et all. I have acces to the file system though when I connect the HD (actually CF) to my pc via usb adapter.
Glanced through the installog and bootlog files briefly but didn't notice anything obvious, I know that the first edition version ends in 1998 and the second in 2222, but no cookie.
Is there a way to determine the version of windows 98 by examining the install files?
I can see the whole \ossetup directory just fine, there I found a file named 815.cat which indicates to me that the original 54845B uses i815 chipset mobo which is very close to 810 ?
Why it doesn't work then?
Also having really hard time to find any drivers for intel 810 for original windows 98 or 95 , what's out there is mostly for 98SE forward.
Any help here?

I took a quick look and it appears that Windows 98 install files (CAB files mostly) had a datestamp of 5/11/98 09:01 PM, while 98SE install files had dates of 4/23/99 11:22 PM. These dates might be off by 1 hour due to issues converting between FAT and NTFS when daylight savings time is involved.

Also, the CAB files for Win98 are mostly 1,716,224 bytes. The CAB files for 98SE are mostly 1,802,240 bytes.

CABs are mostly 1676KB in size (reported by win10) date stamp 11/24/1998 , looks like windows 98 FE , damn:mad:
Thanks man , much appreciated.
Now where to find chipset drivers for that thing?

Now when I think about it did Microsoft change the driver model between win 98 and 98SE or was it 98SE to ME ?
Maybe I could use 98SE drivers after all?
Yet reading from the readme of the intel inf utility that I found for Win. 9x :
"2. One of the following operating systems must be
fully installed and running on the system
before installing this software:

Windows* 98SE 4.10.2222 (Original Release)
Windows* Me 4.90.3000 (Original Release)
Windows* 2000 5.00.2195 (Original Release)
Windows* XP 5.10.2600 (Original Release)
Windows Server* 2003 5.20.3790 (Original Release)

So which is it?

You might try installing Win98 on the computer. If that works and has the proper drivers, you could copy the system files to other media and then copy them back after re-imaging the drive. This would probably require creating a boot floppy so you can copy things before booting from the hard drive. I'm not sure I explained very well, but I hope you get the concept.
