Hello fellow kaypro owners.
I just scored a kaypro 2x on craigslist for free. It seems like the kaypro versioning is kind of confusing - the bios rom number doesn't match the ones I've seen for 2xs online. This one's eprom is labeled 81-478. It also has a modem. I'm hoping to get this thing up and running, but we'll see. I read in the bios rom and I can see a string saying Kaypro CP/M version 2.2 in there.

The crt seems to have a problem - I was curious if others have seen this or know a fix. The background is green and way too bright. I can see the text as brighter green on the green background, but I'd love to be able to fix the screen to have the normal nice contrast because I think the screen is one of the coolest things about these machines and I was hoping to write some ascii demos. Any ideas? I tried the trimpots (carefully, after discharging the flyback transformer) but that didn't help. I'll inspect the board for cracked traces when I get a chance, but I'd love to know if anyone has seen this problem with crts and found a fix, or if replacing the screen with a black and white tv screen or something like that might be possible.

It also doesn't have disks with it - the guy I got it from said he would contact me if he finds them, he thinks he had them at one point. I took one of the drives out and hooked it up to my linux box - I loaded the floppy module and it seemed to recognize it. The light went on and dmesg reported finding a floppy disk, so we'll see if I can write some disks when I get some 5 1/4" disks I bought on ebay.

Anyway, glad to see others who appreciate old stuff like this on here. Hopefully I can fully revive this beast and get the screen looking good again. I got rid of my previous tiny vintage computer collection (a tandy t1100, a mac SE/30 and an apple ][e) a while back, but I miss it, so I'm going to keep an eye out for free cool vintage systems which come my way.

Thanks!

Welcome aboard !

Just search this site - big knowledge base established !

Many will reply to your posts.

Keep the old vintage computers, but also running actively.

Best of luck !

Thanks for preserving another Kaypro !

According to the manual, that is the BIOS version for the newer 2X machines, with internal modem and clock chip. Download the 1484-E service manual from Bitsavers:

That ROM version appears to require the "Universal" (2.2u1) CP/M version, same as the Kaypro 1. You can download an Imagedisk copy from Dave Dunfield's site:

http://www.classiccmp.org/dunfield/img/

Go to the System/Install Disks section and download the Kaypro 1 software.

thanks

thanks

thanks for the info! that helps to be pointed in the direction of the correct disk and manual. A tv repair tech suggested looking for a 'screen' adjustment screw on the flyback transformer to adjust the black level - I'm going to try that tonight and hopefully it improves the screen.

Have you tried the brightness adjust knob on the back of the unit? Mine was turned way up when I got it, I suppose so the guy who photographed the screen could get the text to come out with flash!

If you've tried that, then there /are/ several pots on the monitor control board to adjust contrast/brightness/et c. Just be careful of the HV section.

Yeah, brightness pot is the first thing I tried, but it just adjusts the text brightness, not the background. It seems to just be a voltage divider on the video ttl line from the mother board.

Anyway, I managed to fix the monitor which I'm excited about! I drew out the g2/brightness/focus portion of the crt board schematic and found a resistor that was reading way higher than its color code value. This one has a Toshiba crt and R211 which was supposed to be 270K was reading 2M, so I replaced it. The old one fell in half when I desoldered it - it got cracked somehow. Now it looks as good as new!

Now I just need to wait for my disks to arrive and hope I can figure out how to write them. I found an ancient 8086 pc in a dumpster, so I have a couple more 5 1/4" drives to play with. I also found this page: http://fdutils.linux.lu/disk-id.html apparently linux has a cpmtools package to access cpm filesystems!

Anyone doing any assembly programming on their Kaypro? I'm interested in programming mine and I'm looking for any resources people have - io port addresses, etc. I've looked at a couple bios sources. Is there more info on low level programming of kaypros out there?

Well, I found a nice stash of old computers this weekend at a pay what you want garage sale. (sweet!) I got an original ibm pc AT and was able to write the kaypro 1 system disk on dave's old computers site using ImageDisk and 22disk on that - the kaypro wouldn't boot it though. Maybe one or both of the drives are bad. I guess I'll have to try swapping them and try to determine if it's the disk or the drive.

Success! I finally got a good boot disk. I got the 360k disks someone had on ebay, formatted them for kaypro 2x using 22disk's cfmt on the 286 and wrote the kaypro1 disk on Dave's old computers site using ImageDisk with double stepping turned off. I was happily surprised that perfectwriter uses emacs key commands.

Back in the day I replaced ny screen on a II when I was in spain. Inside there are two small dials about as big as a chopstick on the panel below the CRT. You turn those to adjust all aspects of the image.

FYI -

Believe it or not - the CRT is still available - just do a Google search - about $400 - unbelievable !

Why ?

Chuck - do you have any ideas ?

I understand back in those Kaypro /Osborne years in the 1980’s these CRT's were used in many video security devices.
