Newly aquired Tandy 6000HD! Lots of questions to follow...

Is there any chance of digging up enough information about the unobtainium chip that some enterprising engineer could recreate it is his spare time? ;)
 
What is the ref designator on that chip. I was looking at U47 by accident. Is it U54? Can't seem to locate U50. Then the bulletin calls it a 82S153
Ok found it at U50. Looks like a 18 or 20 Pin chip. Has a sticker that says A2AF and it is an 82S153

From what I read, these might be replaceable with a 27c512.

Ok, that's cool. Oddly enough, I'm looking at an 82S100 right here on a piece of conductive foam in my hand.... but, yes, it's from a Commodore and thus is useless for this purpose, even if 82S100 were the correct part number.

You see,I slightly misremembered the part number; the correct part is an 82S153 (U50). Info is on pages 45 and 46 of the Tech Bulletins PDF. The functional specs for U50 are in the 6000 service manual, pages 139 and 140 (138 and 139 in the scanned PDF). It appears that the 6000 shipped with the newer U50, and 16K/64K jumper-selectable capability is specifically mentioned in the SM, so if a reader for an 82S153 can be made, and a suitable replacement determined, a clone of the 6000's U50 should work on the 12 and 16B.

According to the service manual, you should be able to set the jumpers properly, pop 64K RAM's (128-cycle refresh, of course) in there, and enjoy, since it appears from reading the service manual that you have the updated chip already. No guarantees, of course; the only guarantee would be having a machine with the second 64K bank installed and working, then clone that 82S153. Kelly, if anyone were to have such a beast, you're the likeliest candidate. :) didn't you mention one time that you had an oddball '12B' or something similar?
 
The PLA could probably be replaced with a current-production CPLD on an adapter board that would plug into the PLA socket. I'm not near my computer where my documentation lives. Are the PLA equations for any version(s) of the part in the service manual?

Well I tried setting the jumpers but did not cut the capacitors.

But I have a new problem video is not right. Suspect video driver board in top of unit. See my post about it.
 
Hmm, depending on the required equations, a $2 GAL16V8 might plug right in. I don't have a GAL programmer, but I'd buy one if I had a good enough reason to.
 
So now all of a sudden TRSDOS II 4.2 doesn't complete boot up. Sticks at Loading and then hangs from there. 68K is working according to Xenix. Any ideas.
Have tried to re-create the disk to no avail. Any help appreciated.
 
Do you have another DOS on disk like TRSDOS 2.0? If so, do they boot?
 
All my other disks boot fine. LS-DOS CP/M Dos 2.0 Xenix. Just the DOS II 4.2 is choking.

TRSDOS II 4.x is the only one of those that needs the additional 16K RAM. Possibly you still have a misconfiguration on the main logic board?
 
I guess I can always double check it. Will advise. It didn't need it before though I never had the additional 16K in here. But will look at the jumpers just in case.

OK Kids new problem. Man these old computers can be a pain. When starting Xenix now I am getting BugHlt no68k I have tried reseating the board and all socketed chips including the 68000. Will work for a minute than get a panic. Any ideas?
 
Ok now 68k board +5V line is at a near short to ground. About 12 Ohms. It's preventing the 6000 from starting up. Oh great... Problem after problem.....
 
well found a short near one of the PALS. Seems like the 12 ohm reading is normal. Still getting bughlt no68k even after swapping the CPU. Reseating all socketed chips. Cleaned edge connector etc. So no one out there has seen this problem before. Please help I really need it on this one.
