Original 800 memory modules

Last year I picked up an early 800 with 48k on board, other than being discoloured, it is in great shape. The memory modules are all still in their Atari cases. When I use the machine it runs for many hours and does not seem to get hot, my question is, should I discard the cases on the modules. I read somewhere they can cause overheating.

If they aren't overheating I don't see why you should remove them. They at least add to asthetics.

The cases were actually a known problem back when the 800's came out, later Atari would release the 800's with a full 48k already installed and the modules were no longer cased and the top cover was screwed closed.
