I just ran across a back-of-the-magazine ad in a 1987 issue PC Tech Journal from a company called XCelX. They sold continuously-variable (front-panel knob) synthesized CPU clock add-ons for ATs and 286 clone boxes. Frequency range was 6 to 13 MHz.
They also sold a separate variable speed control for your 80287.
