Power Mac 5400/180 operating system

i have 2 Power Mac 5400/180 and they both work but the only problem is the operating system is in french. i was thinking about doing an upgrade to the harddrive also. i'm more of a pc person so i was wondering if some could mabe point me in the direction of where i could get an iso of the operating system for it. i was wanting to do a fresh install. thanks
 
System software 7.5.3 and the 7.5.5 update are available on the Apple support site. Another option would be to find a Mac OS 7.6 or OS 8 disc for sale on eBay, and take advantage of the 7.6.1 and 8.1 updates available there.

The 5400/180 is a great Mac - one of the later evolutions of the design that would later evolve into the iMac. I have one with a G3 upgrade card and it's a speedy machine with older operating systems.

This software is available as 19 parts of a self-mounting Disk Copy
image. Download all 19 parts to your hard drive and then double-click
on the first part to mount the compressed disk image on your desktop.

Note that self-mounting Disk Images require Mac OS version 7.0.1 or
later. If you are using a version of Mac OS prior to this, you can
download the System 7.5 Network Access floppy disk and boot your
Macintosh from that to use this software.

So you can download the images to your current HD, unarchive them to get an image, then copy it to something bootable to reformat your main drive and install the OS.

Any other OS is not free and will have to be purchased legaly or found someway else.
 
what do i use to unarchive them? i have be trying today and have had no luck. the mac seems to not have the software it needs to make it work.
 
Should be self mounting. Did you download them direct to the mac or did they hit a PC first?

Any mac file that hits a fat/fat32 drive will lose its resource fork (unless it is in a compressed *.sit file) and will not work anymore.
 
i saved them to a pc first. the macs are not connected to the internet and im not sure how too use the internet on them or i don't know if my router is mac compatible? they do have ethernet ports. the mac speaks french so i don't know what i'm looking for. one thing i do know is the mac is running 7.5.3 in french.
 
Your router doesn't need mac support as almost all NIC's work the same way. i am not sure whether System 7.5.3 had the TCP/IP stack yet, but if it does, you should be OK.
 
i think it does have TCP/IP stack but there is still the problem of it is all in french and i don't understand french. plus i don't know macs. this is the first time i have had a mac and have to install an operating system.
 
The Lowermac site makes reference to being able to run Linux on the 5400. I've got a 6100/60 (the slowest of the slow PPC models) here but have never tried anything that MacOS. Does Linux run with any sort of usable speed on these old lower Macs--or should I just scavenge it for parts? I kind of like the "pizza box" profile.
 
i don't really know macs either. all i really know is windows xp. but i might try anyways.
 
If I remember correctly I downloaded System 7 with my PC as well and then put it onto my first Mac without problems.
For the beginning MacOS 7.5.3 is fine for a 5400 although I personally like 9.1 over it just because you can use iTunes 2 on it. :) You'd have to buy that unfortunately.

I heard Linux is not easily installed on those old-world PowerMacs. In fact you can't just drop your cd in and wait for installation, you will have to make installation floppies instead to be able to properly read your Linux cd.
 
I have a Mac OS 7.5.0 CD and a Mac OS 8.1 CD I can make a copy of for you.


I don't have anything below a 6100/66 for master CD's

I seem to recall that I have some sort of System 7 floppy disks,in a complete set.(In English)
If you haven't solved your system software problem yet,I'll loan them to you.

It appears that I have System 7 on Floppy Discs,System 7.6 on CD,MAC OS8 on CD and an Apple Restoration CD dated 1997.
