I have a Thinkpad 760EL and it seems to have a couple problems (not surprising, I got it for $5!). Anyhow, hopefully someone here can help me out with the problems or at least help my identify them.

Problem 1: The Screen seems to have some sort of problem with displaying pictures as a desktop background. The screen is always black (though every icon, application, etc, shows up perfect). When I was checking the disk for errors, I noticed odd lines on the screen starting from about 1/4 into the screen (IE - Screen edge > [ |Starts Here| |Starts here| ] < Screen Edge), if that makes any sense. If not, here is a terrible picture that hopefully clears it up some: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17388159/SAM_2335.JPG Is the screen going out? Is maybe a cable loose?

Problem 2: No sound plays, yet speakers make beep code sounds. Obviously at least one speaker works, because beep codes come out of it. However, when playing a windows sound, or a game, nothing what-so-ever comes out of either speaker. I checked every sound setting imaginable, including moving the sound slider on the keyboard, but nothing. Just the left speaker making beep codes sometimes. (Running Win95)

Thanks for the help.

is windows detecting the sound card? is it marked as a conflict under device manager? I have a few thinkpads with windows 98 installed and most do not have sound because the sound drivers needed were not on the win98 CD and i'm to lazy to hunt them down.

Except for one with OS/2 connect and one with none, the 760EL models came with Win95. They had "16 bit audio chip / 20 voice MIDI FM synthesis / ESS1688", if that can be of use to diagnose or find drivers. Also, the Lenovo site probably has everything that's needed.

The speakers and sound is shown that it is in working order. I think I fixed them. I took apart the laptop and I guess re-seating the keyboard fixed the speaker issue, because I had sound to play.

I think I might have also fixed the screen, I got the background to finally change from being black, haven't used it enough since then the see if those lines are still there or not though.

You should use external monitor. when plugging in, you should press Fn+F7 to switch to it. On 760's, If I have the external plugged in at poweron, the 760 only displays to the external, nothing happens if you plug it in with the 760 already on until i press Fn+F7, then it switches between 3 modes:external only, both, 760 only. If The problem is with your sound driver, re-install it and if the problem further proceed! check the sound card that it should be place correctly.
