PS/1 won’t start BIOS

I recently bought a PS/1 on ebay, worked fine for about an hour then I did something and it stopped working. Help!

According to seller, the battery was dead so I just needed to press F1 during boot-up— I actually got past the BIOS a couple of times without even pressing F1, no problem.

I was running Windows 3.1 and I navigated to a menu that gave me an option to the effect of “Press 1 to exit windows” “Press 2 to exit DOS” —these were not the exact options but it was something like that. (It wasn’t the option to exit windows to go to the DOS prompt, it was something else.) Oddly, I pressed another button and the screen went blank except for a few question marks:

???????

It wouldn’t go anywhere from there, so I booted up. And now the machine does all the beeps, but it won’t even go to the BIOS, the screen stays blank. I’m wondering if I altered a setting, something like the autoexec.bat or something like that? It seems like it’s skipping the BIOS. Maybe it’s trying to go into a network mode? Anyone know how I can bypass that?

F1 won’t work. The machine wasn’t packed that great so maybe it’s a hardware issue but I was indeed able to run it for about a half hour and everything seemed to be going well.

Any suggestions??

My first-course-of-action suggestion is to replace the bad battery, followed by whatever the required 'do this after battery replacement' procedure is for the PS/1.
