Does anyone know of an online usenet archive that can be read online instead of using Google groups? I am starting a probject to put minix 1.3 on my 8088 and I would like to read and search the entire comp.os.minix archive until about 1992 without setting up a stand alone usenet server locally. Any suggestions?

There is the utzoo-wiseman-usenet-archive. I've downloaded it and I'm intending to put it online in a searchable form. Problem is a basic string search is going to take ages! I looked into how to get a fast search, I can't remember off-hand the term, "word indexing" i think is what I was researching. Kinda on the back-burner at the moment. I suppose a quick-and-dirty approach would be to just do a simple-string search and have the results emailed. If someone else does it first, great, just give me the link.

Google groups is hideous with the infinite page length. I found some back-end interface that had separate pages to go back in history, earliest I could go is like 2000.

I see archive.org has now gone the infinite page length madness. <sigh>

You can also point your newsreader of choice at nntp.olduse.net and start reading messages as they're posted - 30 years ago. For example, today will show messages posted on 2/26/88 at around 11am (the time I'm posting this). It's a fun way to watch history unfold. :)
