I stand corrected! Shall not assume this in future. I must admit I don't remember seeing the large type in the US, but I didn't eat much of that sort of food there (mostly been on business trips).

To bring this thread back on topic, when it comes to computers, I like "chips" and "fried" to stay far apart :)
 
Does anyone here in the states have any eletronic hobby shops that would sell components or the kits and tools like rad shack did all those years ago? Im not talking about Frys or large stores but local small hobby. There aren't any around my region I am aware of.

She was mistaken! I know where there are three of them, and I'm pretty sure there are others round the country.

I went to that Ground Round a couple years ago. The experience was awful. I'm pretty sure the only way they stay in business is all the travelers at the hotels. The biggest thing they're missing though is the in-shell peanuts and the entertainment of wait staff slipping and dropping trays every few minutes.

Next time you're coming, we might be able to find you some better food! Sadly though there is a huge trend toward phony Asian (but not Indian!) food here. American fare is on the decline.

Nope, not even the parts stores that used to cater to the pros. Now it's "don't have the part but I can have it sent down from Seattle" sort of affair.
In general, the big boys don't try to get the young 'uns interested any more. Anyone remember the Motorola "HEP" series? It was a good idea--I got my first exposure to the wonderful world of mW RTL IC logic from one of those kits. TO-99 cans, all.

Even if they pandered to the Pi or arduino kits, surely soldering kits would still be applicable. I would love it if my hobby lobby had an area for that, but alas it does not.

I haven't been there yet, however friends have told me they've been in the business forever, and have a large ham radio/ DIY following. Their website isn't that great or definitive of all they have.
 
There are a certain number of "kits" available from Digi-key, Mouser. Microcontroller and such. BG-Micro has odds and ends. There are smaller vendors with catalogs that sell spy oriented kits and whatnot. You'd have to search. Or hope someone sells your info to the right people.
