Hello,
during the design time of my new project, ST-506/412 disk simulator,
the RD51 in my micro-PDP was going defective. I am still able to boot from
the Rx50, but the RD51 does not respond anymore ( RQDX-1 controller).
Error: ERROR UNIT DU0 ERR 14 DRIVE ERROR WISH TO REBOOT [Y,(N)]? The
RD51 disk is responding in such a way that the heads are moving from
start-point to end-point until a retry timeout occurs. Anyway, I will
try to repair the RD51 which is the ST412 from Seagate. The problem
is that I can't find the ST412 schematics. I could find the
ST506_ServiceMan_May82 and the ST412_OEMmanual_Apr82 manual, but the
ST412_OEMmanual_Apr82 does not include any schematic. Maybe, you
have access to the ST-412 schematics. Please let me know this.
Thanks and Regards, Reinhard

Reinhard,

I have never found the RD51 print set either (although I would sure like a copy). I have had similar problems to yours. Sometimes a new low level format solves the problem. I have the RQDX3 (with XXDP ZRQC), but I think you have the Pro350 disk controller with your CTI/QBUS adapter. I'm not sure what you would use to do the LL format.

You do such fine work, that if you get in a bind, I can lend you a known good RD51 controller board. It might take a while to get to Germany though.

Lou

Lou,
thank you for your response.
Thanks for your offer that you want to send me a RD51 controller board
but that is not really needed. The computer museum in Munich schould
have a spare part, but they are currently in a bad situation because
the hall is closed as a precaution because of the danger of collapse.
I have forgotten, that a low level format is available via XXDP. The
remaining problem here is, I have no access to this software. At least,
how to copy the XXDP software to a RX50 or RL02 ? via Kermit ?
Regards, Reinhard

Reihnard,

Kermit would work, or an emulated TU58 is what I would use. You can make a bootable XXDP TU58 image and use TU58.exe running on an IBM PC. There is discussion about such emulation in another thread here where the intent is to use RT-11.

Lou

Reinhard,

do you still need XXDP on RX50 floppies?

I can supply them if you want - I'm from Germany, too :))

Regards,

Ulli

Ulli,

would be nice if you can send me XXDP on a RX50 with ZRQC ?
Many, many thanks in advance, Reinhard

Perhaps this will save you some time... (Assuming you have a working RQDX3 as Lou suggested)

I have written an MSDOS program that will transfer XXDP/ZRQC to a QBUS target system via only the CONSOLE serial port running MicroODT. This has been used to format an RD31 (ST251) with no other drive or serial port in the target system. It's genuine ZRQC and should be able to do your RD51 as well. The transfer program is also Windows compatible, and requires your PC to have COM1 or COM2 serial port hardware. The transfer takes about 13 minutes @ 19200bps.

If your primary need is to format a disk using ZRQC, this can be done directly without having to boot XXDP via TU58 emulator. Please send me a PM if you are interested, and I will supply the download information for the program, XXDP/ZRQC memory image, and instructions.

Once formatted, you can then proceed to other means to load the drive with a system image, knowing that it works.
