Rebuilding Compaq Deskpro 286

Having trouble getting my keyboard to type capital letters, with either shift or caps lock. Is this a problem with the cable or with the keyboard itself? The cable was cracked and frayed because of the environment it was in, but I would think if the cable was damaged, the keyboard wouldn't send any signal at all.

The lack of caps should have nothing at all to do with the cable--it's just a serial link to the PC--4 wires.

Do all other keys work on your keyboard? There's nothing special about shift or caps lock from the keyboard standpoint--they're just another key.

Have you tried running any diagnostics? The IBM PC AT diagnostics disk has a keyboard test program that shows when each key is depressed.

The diagnostics program doesn't have a keyboard testing program, but it does beep whenever a key is pressed, and after some furious button-pressing, I've cleaned the shift keys and caps lock off enough for them to work again. My X and keypad + keys seem to have the same problem, too, but pressing them repeatedly does nothing. Any cleaning tips before I go at it with a screwdriver?

Where does one find the special connectors Compaq uses to get disk drive power off the motherboard?
(asking about a Deskpro 386 specifically, but I assume it's the same on the Deskpro 286)
